Resin Bound Driveways explained

Resin bound driveways across Lancashire

A resin bound driveway is made by mixing clear resin with dried natural aggregate and trowelling it by hand into a smooth, even surface. Every stone is coated and held in place, so there is no loose gravel, and the gaps between the stones let water drain straight through. The finish is neat and modern, and works well on both new builds and older houses.

All Pave lays resin bound driveways, paths and patios from our base in Bamber Bridge, across Lancashire and in Southport and Formby.

Resin bound or resin bonded

The two names sound alike but they are different products.

  • Resin bound. The stone and resin are mixed together before laying, giving a smooth, porous surface with no loose stones. This is what most people mean by a resin drive.
  • Resin bonded. A layer of resin is spread on the base and loose stone is scattered on top. It has a rougher, gravel like texture, is not permeable, and the top stones can come loose over time.

Materials and finishes

The look of a resin drive comes from the aggregate. Blends of natural gravels are the most common, in golds, browns, greys and creams, and marble and other decorative stones are also used. The resin itself should be UV stable, because some cheaper resins turn yellow in sunlight and that cannot be cleaned off. Driveways are laid thicker than paths so the surface can carry the weight of cars, and a smaller stone size gives a smoother finish.

The base matters most

Resin is a surface layer, not a structural one. It will copy any crack or movement in the base below it, so the base has to be right.

  • Laying over an existing drive. Sound tarmac or concrete can often be overlaid, after cleaning and any repairs. Cracked, sunken or breaking up surfaces cannot.
  • A new base. Where the old drive is not suitable, we dig out and build a new base, usually a compacted sub base topped with porous asphalt, so water can pass all the way through.
  • Not over block paving. Movement in the joints of block paving cracks the resin, so we do not lay resin over it.

Firm edging is fixed around the area so the resin has a clean, straight edge to finish against.

Drainage and planning

A resin bound surface laid on a permeable base lets rainwater soak into the ground, which is why it is often used to meet the planning rules for front gardens. In England, more than five square metres of new hard surface in a front garden needs planning permission unless it is permeable or drains to a permeable area within the property. If resin is laid over an existing solid tarmac or concrete drive, the water still runs off the base, so falls and drainage have to be planned in the usual way.

Laying and weather

Resin is mixed on site in small batches and laid by hand, so a dry day matters. It cannot be laid in rain, and cold weather slows the curing. Foot traffic is usually fine after a few hours and cars the next day, depending on the temperature.

Typical uses

  • new driveways and paths with a smooth, modern finish
  • overlaying a sound but tired tarmac or concrete drive
  • patios and garden paths that need to stay free draining
  • areas around trees, where a permeable surface lets water reach the roots

Looking after a resin drive

  • Sweep regularly to stop dirt and leaves settling into the surface.
  • Wash it down once or twice a year with a low pressure hose or jet wash.
  • Treat moss and algae in shaded areas before they take hold.
  • Avoid sharp point loads such as skip feet, motorbike stands and car jacks directly on the surface.
  • Deal with oil and fuel spills quickly, as they can mark the resin.

How All Pave works

We start with a free site survey to check whether your current drive can be overlaid or needs a new base, measure the area and talk through the aggregate blends. The written quote then sets out the base work, depth, blend, edging and drainage. Send us a few photos and your postcode for early guidance. We are based in Bamber Bridge and work across Lancashire, including Southport and Formby.

What a good resin bound driveway job needs

The finish you see sits on work you do not. These are the parts of a resin bound driveway job that decide how well it drains, how it wears and how long it lasts.

The groundwork that matters

  • A sound base, usually open graded tarmac so water can pass through, or existing concrete in good condition.
  • Resin and aggregate mixed in the right ratio and laid in dry weather.
  • Firm edging so the surface finishes against a clean line.
  • On a porous base, water drains through. On a solid base, falls and a drain carry it away.

How a resin bound driveway job runs

We visit the property to measure up and check levels, drainage and access. You then get a written quote setting out the work, and once you are happy we agree a start date with you.

What we can include in the quote

New installs, replacements, adjoining paths or patios, edging, steps and the areas where one surface meets another can all be priced together in one written quote.

What makes resin bound driveways last

Most problems with resin bound driveways come back to three things. The base underneath, the way water moves off it, and how well the edges are finished.

Base Excavation, sub base depth, compaction and preparation decide whether the surface keeps its shape.
Fall Levels, drainage and water movement need thinking through before the visible finish goes down.
Detail Edges, cuts, transitions, borders and a tidy handover are what make the finished job look right.

Resin Bound Driveways questions from Lancashire homeowners

What is included in a proper resin bound driveways installation?
A proper Resin Bound Driveways project starts with a stable and suitable base, sound edges, correct levels and careful mixing and laying of the resin-bound aggregate. The visible finish then uses aggregate colour and size, borders, curves, transitions and how the resin meets adjoining paving or tarmac, with the edges, transitions and final clean-down included in the written scope.
What preparation matters most for resin bound driveways?
The important preparation is a stable and suitable base, sound edges, correct levels and careful mixing and laying of the resin-bound aggregate. All Pave checks those details before agreeing the installation route because the work underneath has a direct effect on the finished result.
How do you decide whether resin bound driveways suits a property?
We look at the condition of any existing base, drainage, falls, cracking, traffic levels, access and edge restraint. We then compare the finish, upkeep and day-to-day use with the alternatives instead of assuming one material or layout is right for every property.
Can resin bound surfacing be laid over an existing driveway?
Sometimes, but only where the existing base is stable, suitable and correctly drained. Cracks, movement or weak construction need dealing with first; otherwise an overlay can carry the old problems into the new finish.
How long does a typical resin bound driveways project take?
The programme depends on base preparation, repairs, edging, area, weather conditions and curing requirements. We confirm the likely sequence after seeing the site, so excavation, preparation, installation and curing or settling time are not squeezed into a generic promise.
Do you remove the old surface before installing Resin Bound Driveways?
Yes. We assess the existing area first and, where needed, remove failed surfaces and rebuild the base properly so the new finish is not sitting on weak ground.
Can you help with drainage as part of Resin Bound Driveways?
Yes. Drainage and water run-off are part of planning the job properly. If falls, channels, or better water control are needed, we build that into the quote.
Can All Pave help choose the right resin bound driveways finish?
Yes. We can compare aggregate colour and size, borders, curves, transitions and how the resin meets adjoining paving or tarmac against the house style, adjoining paths or boundaries, drainage, traffic and budget before the final quote is prepared.
Clear Process, Proper Finish

If you are looking at resin bound driveways, the usual next step is a quick survey, practical advice on finish and layout, and a straight answer on price, timing, and the right route for the property.

We look at the space, the access, the current condition, and what you want the finished result to achieve.

02

Quote & Advice

You get a clear recommendation on the right material, layout, and route, along with a written quote rather than guesswork.

03

Install Properly

Preparation, levels, drainage, edging, and finish are handled properly so the job is not just quick, but right.

04

Tidy Finish

You get a completed job that looks strong, feels properly finished, and improves how the property works day to day.

Typical Project Timeline

Smaller fencing and repair-led jobs can move quickly. Larger driveway, paving, patio, or multi-area exterior projects take longer once preparation, access, and finish detail are factored in properly.

  • A survey and clear brief helps the quote and schedule stay realistic.
  • Ground conditions, drainage work, and overall area size affect timing.
  • Good installations move efficiently, but not at the expense of preparation or finish quality.

Payment & Commercial Shape

Smaller jobs can often be handled simply, while larger projects are better split into sensible stages so the scope, progress, and payment structure stay clear.

  • You get a written quote before meaningful work starts.
  • If the scope changes materially, it gets discussed and priced clearly first.
  • Payment stages are kept straightforward and tied to visible progress where needed.
  • The aim is clarity, not surprise extras or vague moving targets.

Best Fit

  • Homeowners who want a stronger finished result rather than the cheapest quick fix.
  • Properties where layout, access, drainage, privacy, or finish detail genuinely matter.
  • People who want practical advice, a clear quote, and installation handled properly from start to finish.

Probably Not The Right Fit

  • If the only goal is the cheapest job, whatever the preparation.
  • If the plan is to cover over level or drainage problems rather than fix them.

Why The Process Works

  • Clear surveys, written quotations, and practical recommendations rather than vague promises.
  • 20+ years in exterior work and a long track record across Lancashire and surrounding areas.
  • Real property-focused advice on finish, layout, drainage, durability, and kerb appeal.
  • A straightforward route from first enquiry to completed job with no sales fog in the middle.
