Driveways and gardens in the Rossendale Valley
Rossendale is a borough in the east of Lancashire, following the upper River Irwell through the Pennine hills. Rawtenstall is the largest town, with Bacup, Haslingden and Whitworth, and villages such as Waterfoot, Helmshore, Edenfield and Crawshawbooth along the valley roads. The A56 and the A682 run through the borough, and the M66 links it south towards Greater Manchester.
The valley setting shapes how outside work needs to be planned. Many streets and driveways are on a slope, and the hills see plenty of rain, so the falls on a drive, the way water is taken off the surface and the strength of the edges matter even more than usual. On a steep drive we also look at grip and at where water will run at the bottom of the slope before recommending a surface.
If your new drive needs a dropped kerb, that is approved by Lancashire County Council as the highways authority for Rossendale, and it needs agreeing before any work is done on the pavement. In England, paving more than five square metres of a front garden with a surface that does not let water through also needs planning permission unless the water drains to a permeable area within the property, so drainage is planned at the survey.
