Block Paving explained
Block paving driveways across Lancashire
Block paving is a long standing choice for driveways across Lancashire, and for good reason. Concrete blocks are hard wearing, come in a wide range of colours and sizes, and can be laid in patterns that suit anything from a Victorian terrace to a new build. Because each block is a separate unit, a drive can be lifted and relaid in sections if it ever needs a repair.

Choosing the right block
- Thickness. Blocks for paths and patios are often 50mm thick. Driveways that carry cars are normally laid in 60mm blocks, and heavier use calls for thicker blocks again.
- Size and shape. The standard rectangular block suits most layouts. Larger format blocks give a more modern look, while tumbled and tegula style blocks give a softer, traditional finish.
- Colour. Single colours give a clean look. Blended colours hide everyday dirt and tyre marks better, and a contrasting border frames the drive.
- Permeable blocks. These have wider joints filled with fine grit so rainwater soaks through into a specially built sub base. They are one way to meet the planning rules for front gardens.
The laying pattern matters as much as the block. Herringbone is the strongest pattern where cars turn and brake, because the blocks lock together in two directions. Stretcher bond and basket weave suit paths, patios and lightly used areas.
Preparation and the sub base
What decides whether a drive stays flat for years is the ground underneath, and this is where cheap installations usually fall short.
A properly built drive starts with digging out the old surface and topsoil down to firm ground. A membrane is laid where the ground needs one, then a crushed stone sub base is spread and compacted in layers. On most domestic driveways the sub base is around 150mm deep once compacted, and more where the ground is soft. The depth is set at the survey, not guessed on the day.
On top goes a laying course of sharp sand, screeded to the finished levels. The blocks are laid onto the sand and cut in around the edges, then kiln dried sand is brushed into the joints and the whole area is compacted so the blocks bed down and lock tight.
Edge restraints hold everything together. Without a firm edge, blocks slowly creep outwards and the joints open up. We set kerbs or edging blocks on a concrete bed and haunch them with concrete so the edge cannot move.
Drainage and planning
A drive is laid to a gentle fall so rain runs away from the house, towards a drain, a channel or a lawn or border where it can soak in. Where a drive slopes towards a garage or the front door, a channel drain across the slope collects the water before it reaches the building. The finished surface should also sit at least 150mm below the damp proof course of the house.
In England, paving more than five square metres of a front garden with a surface that does not let water through needs planning permission, unless the water drains to a permeable area within the property. Permeable block paving, or ordinary blocks with the water directed to a soakaway, border or rain garden, avoids the need to apply. A new dropped kerb has to be approved by the local highways authority.

Looking after block paving
- Sweep regularly so leaves and grit do not build up in the joints.
- Top up the joint sand if it washes out, especially in the first year while it settles.
- Pull or treat weeds early, before their roots spread the joints.
- Deal with oil drips quickly, as they soak in and are harder to lift later.
- If you use a pressure washer, keep the nozzle at an angle and brush fresh sand into the joints afterwards.
