  • Relaid paving slabs for our garden path which had sunk quite badly due to lack of cement. Very friendly and polite, fair pricing. Would recommend.

Tegula Block Driveways explained

Tegula and tumbled block driveways in Lancashire

Tegula is the name of a well known range of tumbled concrete paving, and the word is now widely used for any block with softened, slightly irregular edges and an aged look. Several manufacturers make blocks in this style. Laid well, a tumbled block drive looks as though it has been there for years, which suits stone cottages, older terraces and farmhouses, and softens the look of a newer house.

All Pave lays tegula style driveways, paths and courtyards from our base in Bamber Bridge, across Lancashire and in Southport and Formby.

How tumbled block differs from standard block paving

Standard blocks have crisp, square edges and sit tight together. Tumbled blocks are rolled in a drum after they are made, which rounds the edges and gives each block a slightly different face. The result is a textured, cobbled look with wider joints.

  • Mixed sizes. Many tumbled ranges come in three block sizes laid in a random pattern, which gives a natural, uneven look. Single size layouts are also available for a more regular finish.
  • Colour blends. Most ranges are blended, mixing warm browns, greys or buff tones. When laying, we draw blocks from several packs at once so the colours spread evenly and you do not end up with patches of one shade.
  • Setts and borders. Matching setts can be used for borders, rumble strips and circles, and they work well alongside natural stone.
  • Thickness. Driveway grade tumbled blocks are usually 60mm thick or more. Thinner blocks suit paths and patios only.

Preparation and sub base

A tumbled block drive is built the same way as any good block paving drive, and it depends just as much on what is underneath. We dig out to firm ground, lay a membrane where needed and build a crushed stone sub base in compacted layers. The depth depends on the ground and how the drive is used, and is set at the survey.

A sharp sand laying course is screeded to level, the blocks are laid, and the edges are cut in. Kerbs or edging are set on concrete and haunched so the paving cannot spread. Because the joints are wider, the jointing sand is brushed in and compacted in more than one pass so the joints fill properly.

Drainage

The drive is laid to falls so rain runs away from the house to a drain, channel or planted area, and the surface is kept at least 150mm below the damp proof course. Permeable tumbled blocks are available, with open joints that let water soak through to a permeable sub base. On a front garden that helps meet the planning rules, which require permission for more than five square metres of hard surface that does not let water through, unless it drains to a permeable area within the property.

Where tegula works best

  • driveways on period, rural and character properties
  • courtyards and farmyards where a softer finish suits the surroundings
  • paths and steps that tie a drive into a cottage garden
  • borders and details alongside Indian stone patios
  • newer houses where the owner wants a less uniform frontage

Looking after a tumbled block drive

  • Sweep regularly and keep an eye on the joints, which lose sand faster than standard paving.
  • Top up the jointing sand when it drops, especially after heavy rain or a pressure wash.
  • Treat weeds and moss early so their roots do not loosen the blocks.
  • Expect a new replacement block to look brighter than its neighbours for a while, until it weathers in.

How All Pave works

Every job starts with a free site survey. We look at the levels, drainage and access, show you the blend and size options that suit the house, and then send a written quote covering the excavation, sub base, edging, blocks and drainage. For early guidance, send us a few photos and your postcode. We work from Bamber Bridge across Lancashire, including Southport and Formby.

What a good tegula driveway job needs

The finish you see sits on work you do not. These are the parts of a tegula driveway job that decide how well it drains, how it wears and how long it lasts.

The groundwork that matters

  • A compacted sub base, exactly as a standard block paved driveway needs.
  • Blocks drawn from several packs at once so the colour blend stays even.
  • Kerbs and edging chosen to suit the older, tumbled look of the blocks.
  • Falls and drainage planned before any blocks are laid.

What we can include in the quote

New installs, replacements, adjoining paths or patios, edging, steps and the areas where one surface meets another can all be priced together in one written quote.

What makes tegula block driveways last

Most problems with tegula block driveways come back to three things. The base underneath, the way water moves off it, and how well the edges are finished.

Base Excavation, sub base depth, compaction and preparation decide whether the surface keeps its shape.
Fall Levels, drainage and water movement need thinking through before the visible finish goes down.
Detail Edges, cuts, transitions, borders and a tidy handover are what make the finished job look right.

Tegula Block Driveways questions from Lancashire homeowners

What is included in a proper Tegula block driveways installation?
A proper Tegula Block Driveways project starts with the correct excavation, compacted sub-base, edge restraints and a consistent laying course before the tumbled blocks are installed. The visible finish then uses Tegula colour blends, mixed block sizes, laying direction, contrasting borders and detailed edges, with the edges, transitions and final clean-down included in the written scope.
What preparation matters most for Tegula block driveways?
The important preparation is the correct excavation, compacted sub-base, edge restraints and a consistent laying course before the tumbled blocks are installed. All Pave checks those details before agreeing the installation route because the work underneath has a direct effect on the finished result.
How do you decide whether Tegula block driveways suits a property?
We look at driveway levels, vehicle loading, access width, drainage, borders and how the aged-style blocks will sit against the house. We then compare the finish, upkeep and day-to-day use with the alternatives instead of assuming one material or layout is right for every property.
How is a Tegula driveway different from standard block paving?
Tegula-style blocks have a more aged, textured character and are often laid in mixed sizes. The structural preparation remains just as important, but the finished appearance is more traditional and detail-led.
How long does a typical Tegula block driveways project take?
The programme depends on dig-out, sub-base work, drainage, the mixed-size laying pattern, edge detail and weather. We confirm the likely sequence after seeing the site, so excavation, preparation, installation and curing or settling time are not squeezed into a generic promise.
Can you quote from photos first?
Yes. Photos and a postcode help us give early guidance, then we can tighten it up with a site visit where needed.
Can Tegula Block Driveways be matched to the style of my property?
That is the point of surveying it properly. We look at colour, layout, edging, access, and how the finished area ties into the house rather than dropping in a generic pattern.
Can All Pave help choose the right Tegula block driveways finish?
Yes. We can compare Tegula colour blends, mixed block sizes, laying direction, contrasting borders and detailed edges against the house style, adjoining paths or boundaries, drainage, traffic and budget before the final quote is prepared.
Clear Process, Proper Finish

What working with All Pave on tegula block driveways looks like

If you are looking at tegula block driveways, the usual next step is a quick survey, practical advice on finish and layout, and a straight answer on price, timing, and the right route for the property.

01

Free Survey

We look at the space, the access, the current condition, and what you want the finished result to achieve.

02

Quote & Advice

You get a clear recommendation on the right material, layout, and route, along with a written quote rather than guesswork.

03

Install Properly

Preparation, levels, drainage, edging, and finish are handled properly so the job is not just quick, but right.

04

Tidy Finish

You get a completed job that looks strong, feels properly finished, and improves how the property works day to day.

Typical Project Timeline

Smaller fencing and repair-led jobs can move quickly. Larger driveway, paving, patio, or multi-area exterior projects take longer once preparation, access, and finish detail are factored in properly.

  • A survey and clear brief helps the quote and schedule stay realistic.
  • Ground conditions, drainage work, and overall area size affect timing.
  • Good installations move efficiently, but not at the expense of preparation or finish quality.

Payment & Commercial Shape

Smaller jobs can often be handled simply, while larger projects are better split into sensible stages so the scope, progress, and payment structure stay clear.

  • You get a written quote before meaningful work starts.
  • If the scope changes materially, it gets discussed and priced clearly first.
  • Payment stages are kept straightforward and tied to visible progress where needed.
  • The aim is clarity, not surprise extras or vague moving targets.

Best Fit

  • Homeowners who want a stronger finished result rather than the cheapest quick fix.
  • Properties where layout, access, drainage, privacy, or finish detail genuinely matter.
  • People who want practical advice, a clear quote, and installation handled properly from start to finish.

Probably Not The Right Fit

  • If the only goal is the cheapest job, whatever the preparation.
  • If the plan is to cover over level or drainage problems rather than fix them.

Why The Process Works

  • Clear surveys, written quotations, and practical recommendations rather than vague promises.
  • 20+ years in exterior work and a long track record across Lancashire and surrounding areas.
  • Real property-focused advice on finish, layout, drainage, durability, and kerb appeal.
  • A straightforward route from first enquiry to completed job with no sales fog in the middle.
