Landscaping at All Pave means the hard structure of a garden. Planning the layout

A good garden layout starts with how you want to use the space. Where do you sit in the afternoon sun? Where do the bins go? Which routes do people actually walk? Answering those questions first stops paths going to the wrong place and patios ending up in permanent shade.

We then look at the practical side. That means levels across the garden, where surface water collects, how materials and machinery will get in, and how the new work meets the house, the driveway and the boundaries.

Levels and steps

Many Lancashire gardens slope, whether gently towards the house or steeply up a hillside. Changes in level can be handled with steps, raised patio areas and retaining edges. Steps need an even rise and a comfortable tread depth so they are safe to use, and should be built on a proper base so they do not tilt or crack over time.

Drainage

Standing water is one of the most common reasons people call us. Patios and paths are laid to falls so rain runs away from the house and off the paving, and any hard surface next to the house sits at least 150mm below the damp proof course. Where water collects, channel drains, gravel filled trenches or a soakaway can carry it away. Sorting out drainage before choosing materials saves a lot of problems later.

We work with the same materials we use on driveways, so the garden can tie in with the front of the house.

  • Resin bound surfacing for smooth, free draining paths and patios.

Each hard surface is built on a compacted sub base suited to how it will be used, with firm edging so it stays in place.

  • Check drains and channels and keep them clear.
  • Treat timber fencing every few years.
